Although you most likely will not be asked to produce a lengthy paper in a mathematics class, some writing will be required. Therefore, it is important to know what constitutes high-quality writing in mathematics. Below is a checklist to assist you in successfully completing math assignments that include writing.

To ensure good writing in mathematics you must:

• Explain the problem to the reader. Assume that the reader is unfamiliar with the problem; clearly restate the important information.
•Define clearly all variables used. Include correct units.
•Identify your chosen strategy to solve the problem and tell why you used it.
•Explain your reasoning step-by-step in a logical order.
•Use mathematics vocabulary.
•Label diagrams, tables, graphs, or other visual representations.
•Use complete sentences and correct punctuation, grammar, and spelling.
•Ensure writing is clear and concise.
•Type (when appropriate) or neatly handwrite the assignment.
•Restate the question in your final paragraph.
•Give your final answer in a complete sentence using correct units.
•Proofread your solution.
•Cite references as needed
