| Managing Your Writing Many students make the mistake of forgetting about a writing assignment once they have turned it in. There are many reasons, however, why you should be careful about saving, backing up, and storing your writing. Follow the few simple steps below to avoid trouble later on. • It’s a good idea to create a writing folder for each of your academic classes. • When using the computer, name and save files as soon as you open them. Give each file a name that relates specifically to an assignment. If you use overly broad file names like “my work,” “stuff,” or “Amanda,” documents can be difficult to locate it later. • ALWAYS save writing assignments. This really helps when you need to revise something. When typing, get into the habit of using the “save” command often, after each paragraph you write, for example. If you do this you won’t lose all your work if there is a sudden power failure or other problem. • Use multiple back ups. External storage devices such as discs or flash drives are highly recommended. Keep a hard copy too, just in case. Save drafts of handwritten assignments. • E-mail your writing to your teacher at mvrhs.org if you have printer problems. Have a “plan B” should other system problems occur. Designate an alternative computer at a friend’s, parent’s workplace, the public library, etc. |
