Introduction

In order to help you be a successful writer at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, the faculty has provided the following guidelines about how to better understand and complete your writing assignments. As a new MVRHS student, it is important that you read the following information. Review it periodically, especially when you are given important writing tasks. While some of this will be familiar to you, much of it will be new. Ask your subject teacher for help clarifying any sections you don’t fully understand.

The faculty recommends that you use Writers INC: A Student Handbook for Writing and Learning, Houghton Mifflin Co., 2001, as your primary resource. Ninth grade students are assigned the text in English class and copies are available throughout the school.

Because all your teachers have high expectations for the quality of student writing, it’s important for you to care about the quality of your written work in all subjects, not just English class. Becoming a good writer is like becoming a good musician or athlete — the most successful ones practice continually and are rarely satisfied with their performance.
