Writing for English
All English classes require that students complete a variety of writing assignments. Each teacher will present assignment-specific guidelines for students. This writing handbook addresses many of the types and terms of writing used in English as well as other subject areas. Use both this handbook’s sections and Writers INC as guidelines when writing for English.
Helpful Hints for Writing
Here are some general guidelines and strategies that will help you with writing assignments in all subject areas:
- Always refer to and follow carefully the assignment directions provided by your teacher.
- Be sure to address the question or writing prompt given.
- Discuss your writing ideas with a teacher before you begin writing.
- Review the rubric or evaluation criteria for the assignment BEFORE you begin writing.
- Refer to the rubric or evaluation criteria while you write as well as after you have completed the assignment.
- Use the writing process strategies whenever possible.
- Leave some time between each draft so that you are able to review the writing with fresh eyes each time you approach it.
- Have someone read your piece and offer suggestions before you write the final draft.
- Read the piece aloud after each draft to check for fluency and coherence.
- Proofread carefully before you submit your writing as a final draft.
- For questions regarding style and mechanics refer to Writers INC.
- When given essay tests, manage your time so that you are able to plan and organize your ideas before you begin writing and proofread after you have finished.
In English, always follow the MLA Style for citing sources when writing any kind of research paper. (See Writers INC.)
Follow the format guidelines given for the assignment.
As you use elements of the writing process, note what works for you and what doesn’t. Apply this knowledge as you approach each new writing assignment. |
