Writing for Business Education

The following guidelines for writing in the Business Education Department include those for book and magazine report/reviews, E-mail protocols, business letters, and research reports:

In the Business Education Department we require our students to read and report on a number of topics. We start the year with weekly reports on articles that we read relating to the subject of the particular lesson under review. These articles can be from newspapers or magazines. These writings should follow the accompanying format:

Book & Magazine Reports

1.Introductory paragraph

In preparing a book or magazine report, the students should indicate the title of the magazine or book and the name of the author. Give a description of the book or magazine’s background and setting. Finally, there should be a summary of the story’s main idea. Tell concisely what the book or magazine is about.

2.Body of the Report

This is the heart of the report. In this section you should have several smaller paragraphs that give insights into the story, helping to explain your comprehension and whether you have read the book or article and understand its theme. Start with a paragraph identifying the main participants of the story, positions (job titles), personalities etc., and give your assessment of them.

Conflict of some type is evident in most stories. This could be in the form of individual versus individual, individual versus society (e.g., a corporation), etc.Determine what type of conflict and explain it in another paragraph.

A summary of the plot of the story should be contained in the next few paragraphs. Identify the rising action, the climax, and the falling action.

3.Concluding Paragraph

At the conclusion of your book or magazine report, there should be a personal evaluation of the story. In it you can identify its strengths and weaknesses in your own words and opinions. Use examples from the book/story to support your evaluation
