Audience, Form, and Style

One of the first things to consider is your audience. There are both formal (school or business) and informal (yourself or your friends) audiences. What is appropriate in style, tone, or content for one may not be for the other. For example, many students use abbreviations like “u” for “you” in instant messaging, but non- conventional spellings should never be used with formal audiences.

Most school assignments call upon you to use one or more of the following types of writing:

Description: using details and the senses to create a picture or image in the reader’s mind

Narration: relating a series of events in sequence or story form

Persuasion: advocating a particular position or value

Exposition: explaining, giving the underlying reasons for something
