| Membership Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student. The NHS is a nation-wide organization with over 15,000 chapters. Membership is based on four qualities: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Selection to NHS is a privilege, not a right. Students do not apply to the NHS; instead, they may be asked to provide information to be used by the NHS Faculty Council to support their candidacy for membership. Membership is granted only to those students selected by the Faculty Council. Membership is not conveyed simply because a student has achieved a specific level of academic performance. NHS is more than just an honor roll, and our chapter, the Neope Branch of the NHS, places a strong emphasis on leadership, service, and character. Contact: Chad Card (Faculty advisor) |
Selection Process Summary The following process has been outlined by the Faculty Council and by national guidelines. The Faculty Council is appointed each year by the principal, and it is responsible for voting on the selection or the non-selection of candidates. 1. To be nominated for the National Honor Society, a student must be a junior or senior with a cumulative weighted academic index which is 4.5 or higher. Candidates should also have an average grade of 90 in discipline for the previous year. 2. During both September and March, students who meet these criteria will be invited in a letter from the principal to complete an activity information sheet. The information sheet will allow students to convey what they are doing in the school and community. Students must complete and submit this form on time to convey an interest in membership. 3. Teachers are asked to evaluate the nominees. 4. The NHS Faculty Council then reviews the activity sheet and teacher comments, and then votes for selection or non-selection of the student. 5. A letter indicating selection or non-selection is then sent to the candidate. Non-selection for our chapter is often the result of the student not having completed service work, although leadership roles and character issues are important as well. 6. Students who are selected for NHS will be invited to an induction banquet held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 30th 2007 in the high school cafeteria. An induction ceremony will be held after the banquet at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Students selected in the spring may take part in the fall induction dinner ceremony. |
