Prerequisite: Global 9; required of all Sophomores
Global Studies 10 is a survey on 20th Century World History. Units include the Age of Imperialism (c.1870-1914), The Causes and Consequences of WW1, the Russian Revolution, The Rise of Totalitarianism, WWII, the Holocaust and the Cold War. As an integral part of this program, Global 10 students are involved in an extensive research project on the African American Heritage Trail of Martha's Vineyard which includes a large component of interaction with our island community through field trips, site maintenance, research, use of island research resources and guest speakers. There is an active program of collaboration with educational organizations. Research is an integral part of this course as students explore various topics using primary sources and island resources when applicable.
INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION-During the Industrial revolution Europe saw a shift from an economy based on farming and handicrafts to an economy based on manufacturing by machines in factories. (link to power point on Industrial Revolution)
IMPERIALISM-Western colonialism spread throughout the non-Western world.Great Britian, Spain, Holland, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States competed for markets and raw materials for their expanding economies. (link to power point on Imperialism)
WORLD WAR I- World War I devastated the economic, social, and political order of Europe. (link to power point on World War I)
THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION-In 1917 during WW I revolution sweeps across Russia ending the Romanov Dynasty. Soon the Communist under Lenin take control of the country and withdraw from the War. (link to power point on the Russian Revolution)
BETWEEN THE WARS-The Allies win World War I and dictate the Peace Settlements. These punative treaties , Inflation and the onset of the Great Depresson sets the scene for the rise of Dictatorial Regimes and World War II. (link to power point on The Peace Settlement)
WORLD WAR II- Nazi Germany's actions and Japans ambitions in SE Asia made World War II inevitable.

THE HOLOCAUST- Adolf Hitler's philosophy of Aryan superiority leads to the Holocaust. Japan's conquest of Southeast Asia forced millions of native peoples to labor for the Japanese war machine.
THE COLD WAR-The defeat of the Axis by the Allies leads to a new world. The two new super powers , Russia and the United States) view the other's foriegn policy as seeking world domination. During this time many hot wars erupt.

VIETNAM-The most devisive War in Modern US History. Huge numbers of US troops were sent to South Vietnam . Their purpose was to keep the Communist Regime of North Vietnam from gaining control of South Vietnam. Us policy saw the conflict in terms of the Domino Theory.
