Creating a Slide Show in AppleWorks

Original Setup

In AppleWorks create a new Drawing document. You should be in the "New Documents" Window but if you're not click on FILE, NEW.

Click on Drawing then go to the right and click on the button that says "Use Assistant or Stationary". (Don't use the button "Create New Document" .)

As soon as you click on "Use Assistant", the box on the left will change. Scroll down to Presentation, Highlight it and click OK

Click Next

Pick a Style: Basic or one of the Business styles will do, Click Next

Click Just start me out, Click Next

There are several options here including the one to have a page number or slide number inserted on each slide. Check the ones you want, Click Create.

The basic outline of the Slide Show will be created.

Using the Master Slide

This will affect the appearance of every slide in your show.

Click inside the first slide.

Click on Options, Edit Master Page

Change the color background or the texture by clicking on the palettes ( usually to the left, it's the colors just under the pouring paint bucket)

Choose a color.

Choose the Rectangle Tool (it's the tool in the upper left shaped like a rectangle, click on it) and draw a box covering the entire slide by clicking in the upper left corner of the slide, continuing to hold down the mouse button, and drag the box outline to the lower right of the slide..

Click Arrange, Move to Back.

Click inside the slide.

Click Arrange, Move to Back again.

You should now see the new color behind any decorative lines.

Insert a graphic by clicking on File, Library or by inserting your own graphic. (See instructions later on.)

Click on Options, Edit Master Page. This will bring you back to the first slide.

The Slides

Now you are ready to edit the slides in your show. The first slide will be showing. To see subsequent slides, scroll down the page. To add more slides if you need to, Click on Format, Document and change the value in Pages Down from 4 to some higher number.

Change the text in the slide by clicking on the Text Tool ( the capital letter A) and then clicking on the text.

Inserting Text, Pictures or Movies

If you want to move one of the slides pre-defined areas, you must unlock it by clicking on Arrange, Unlock

Drag a picture into your slide OR

Select the Pointer Tool ( the arrow ), Click on File, Insert and then navigate to the file you want. It could be a text file, a graphics file or a QuickTime movie.

If it's a QuickTime movie go to Window, Slide Show

Click Auto Play and Completely play before advancing.

A QuickTime movie can be just a sound file. In that case don't check Completely play before advancing. Then the music will play throughout the show.

The Pointer Tool and the Text Tool

If you insert a picture with the Text Tool selected ( it's the A icon ) you will insert an In-line Graphic. The picture will move as if it were a text character. This means you can't position it easily in your slide.

If you insert a picture with the Pointer Tool selected ( it's the Arrow icon to the left of the Text Tool icon ) you can move the picture around in your slide. It is called a Floating Graphic.

Save Your File

Click on File, Save

If you logged in correctly you should be in the correct folder.

Pick an original name, not slide show ! If someone else happens to pick the same name and saves a file, your file will be erased.

Save your file frequently !

Few things are more frustrating than working an entire period on your slide show and then not being able to save any of your work.

A keyboard shortcut to save a file is Control - S ( on a PC ) or Command - S (on a Mac ) Control = Ctrl, Command = the key with the apple icon.

Running the Slide Show

Click on Window, Slide Show

Put a check mark in Fit to Screen and Center on Screen

Uncheck Show Cursor

Optionally add a Background or Border by clicking on the little palette icon.

Click Start to start

If Advance Every ... is not checked you can click the mouse button or the Enter Key to advance the slide show. At the end of the slides, click the Escape key.

In-line Graphics

An in-line graphic acts just like a text character. You can change the size (but not reshape it.). You can center it. The graphic moves with the text. This is useful for a graph that needs to be with a particular text. For the most part you don't want an in-line graphic, you want a floating graphic.

Floating Graphics

If you insert a floating graphic you'll have much more control over positioning the graphic. Click on the Pointer Tool before inserting a picture. After you insert the graphic, you can put graphics behind the text (Arrange, Move to Back )

Draw a Text Box

For free floating text, draw a text box by holding down the Option Key ( Alt Key on a PC ), pick the Text Tool and drag to form a box over the existing slide. Change the font or style as you wish. Now choose the Pointer Tool to move and resize the text box. Another options is Arrange,Freely Rotate to rotate the text. Don't forget to unclick Free Rotate when you're finished. Use Format, Text Color to change the color. Use Arrange, Move to Back to put the new text box behind the existing graphic.

Text Wrap Around a Graphic

To see both the graphic and the text, with the Pointer Tool chosen, click on the graphic, choose Options, Text Wrap, Regular. You should keep the graphic at either end of the text lines. If you don't the split text is hard to read.

The gutter is the space between the text and the graphic.

Irregular Wrap will follow the shape of the graphic. If it doesn't turn the Text Wrap off. With the Pointer Tool click on the irregularly shaped drawing tool. Draw an outline around your graphic. Move this graphic to the back ( Arrange, Move to Back ) and wrap the text again ( Options, Text Wrap, Irregular ). Turn the line color off with the palette. Group the two objects ( Click both objects while holding down the Shift Key, then click on Arrange, Group )

Save Your File Now

Click on the letter A in the toolbox area ( usually to the left of the screen)

Type in some text.

Click on the Arrow icon in the tool box area to move and resize the text box.
