Persuasive speeches

The next major assignment will be a speech in which you choose one topic and try to persuade people to see your point of view. In order to persuade other people’s opinions, your speech should be logically sound, well-supported, and eloquently delivered.

The topic should be debatable.
Bad: The U.S. should do all it can to prevent terrorism.
Good: The U.S. should be allowed to torture terrorists.
The topic should be narrowly defined:
Bad: Athletes shouldn’t use steroids.
Good: Major League Baseball should randomly drug-test every player.
The topic should be supportable:
Bad: Chocolate is the best flavor of ice cream.
Good: Thomas Jefferson should be considered our best president.

The choice of topics is up to you. I would suggest picking a topic that you are interested in because not only will it make the research you have to do for the project a more worthwhile experience, but it will also help to make your speech more passionate.

The presentations will be given Thursday, March 20th and Monday, March 24th.

If you are unprepared to give your speech on the date it is due, you will lose ten points per class until you make the speech.

Have fun with the project and I look forward to hearing your speech.
