English 10 - Honors
Mr. Sawyer
The second major writing assignment
of the first quarter will be to write a personal essay in which
you conceptualize the virtue of "honor." Your task is
to either define or illustrate the standards that you feel represent
your personal sense of honor.
The essay should be in the vicinity of 500 words. Because the essay is relatively short, it would be best to limit the scope of your essay. Rather than coming up with a wide-ranging theory on the subject, a better approach would be to focus on one aspect of “honor.” The best way to define or illustrate is through use of example. Thus, your best bet to accomplishing the purpose of the essay is to use poignant, and detailed, examples to illustrate your point.
The rough draft is due on Friday, November 2nd
The final draft is due on Thursday, November 8th
The following rubric will be used to evaluate the essay:

- Depth of thought will evaluate your
ability to show a serious reflection about the concept of honor
that goes beyond the everyday level of discourse.
- Specificity of detail will evaluate your ability to use examples
that clearly and convincingly illustrate the point you trying
to support.
- Organization will evaluate your ability to present your ideas
in a logical manner.
- Varied Sentences will evaluate your ability to incorporate the
use of the colon and semicolon into your sentence patterns.
- Spelling/Grammar will evaluate your ability to present a final
draft free that's mistake-free.
- Vocabulary will evaluate your ability to use three vocabulary
words from the first six weeks effectively in your essay.
