The Catcher in the Rye writing assignment
The assignment calls for your to formulate your own thesis about Salinger’s style and then to support it with examples from the book. Your thesis should be focused, insightful, and analytical.
Some suggestions of things to look at considering Salinger’s style:
- Theme
- Symbolism
- Narration
- Metaphor
- Plot
- Structure
- Foreshadowing
- Irony
- Characterization
- Diction
- Dialogue
Keep in mind however, you are not writing an essay about symbolism in The Catcher in the Rye; rather, you are formulating an insightful thesis about the way Salinger uses symbolism and then supporting it with textual evidence.
You should have a workable thesis sentence by Friday, February 16th.
The rough draft will be due on Thursday, March 6th (20 points)
The final draft will be due on Wednesday, March 12th (100 points)
You will be evaluated based on the following rubric:
Organization will evaluate your ability to articulate a clear and cogent argument
Support will evaluate your use of direct quotes to support your point
Depth will evaluate your ability to explore the topics in a deep and profound manner
Thesis will evaluate your ability to present a focused thesis statement
Appearance will be an evaluation of your finished product (spelling, grammar, etc)
Vocabulary will be an evaluation of your use of five vocab words used properly in the essay.
Rough drafts must be in on the date they are due or they will not be accepted for credit. Ten points per class will be deducted for any late final drafts.
