Ms. Ferrone
Advanced Placement English Literature
Course Expectations and Policies
2007-2008
Welcome to Advanced Placement English Literature course! As you know by now, this is a college-level course devoted to the study of literature, drama, and poetry. The primary goal of the course is to develop your abilities as a reader and writer and in doing so prepare you for the AP test in May.
AP English is a demanding course that requires a steadfast commitment from all participants. We will guide each other to become more mature, independent and critical thinkers, but to do so everyone must put in their best effort consistently. This means always being prepared to participate and contribute to class discussion and working hard on the various written assignments you will receive throughout the year.
There is no doubt that this will be a challenging year for all of us, but I hope we can work together to make it the best it can be. I am very much looking forward to working with all of you in the coming months!
CURRICULUM
The readings in AP English will be comprised of works of "literary merit" from a variety of genres, time periods, and cultures, but will emphasize those written originally in English. Units may be organized by theme, genre, or time period, but one important objective of the course is to discover the contrasts and similarities among the texts we read regardless of how I have organized them.
Below you will find a preliminary list of works we will read this year. In addition, we will read various chapters from Writing About Literature by Edgar V. Roberts. Be aware that this list may change as we progress through the year.
METHODS
The general structure of the class will be that of a seminar in which discussion and analysis will be a major focus. You will be required to make presentations and engage in individual and group projects. I will lecture on specific topics as well as invite guest speakers to the class when possible.
GRADING
Grades are weighted according to the following:
Participation 25%; written assignments, tests, projects 50%; Journal 25%
