Inclusion Services and Specific Instruction in Special Education (I.D.E.A.),

SUPPORT SERVICES IN ACCOMMODATION (Section 504 A.D.A.), INCLUSION SERVICES & SPECIFIC INSTRUCTION IN SPECIAL EDUCATION (I.D.E.A.)Through collaborative planning, consultation, accommodation, specific instruction and inclusive learning experiences, the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) provides a continuum of educational services and access to specialized and individualized services for children with disabilities.

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (A.D.A.), and the 1997 Amendments of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (I.D.E.A.), MVRHS provides evaluation, accommodation and specific instruction as required by Federal and State regulations. Parents or school personnel may refer a student for evaluation culminating in the determination of eligibilityand the development of an Individual Educational Plan.

RESOURCE SKILLS

5 Credits Full Year

Prerequisite: Recommendation of Special Education Team and parental approval as indicated in the Individual Educational Plan.

The Support Service Team, with parental agreement, determines the focus of resource class for each participant with consideration of the individual student's particular educational needs. Services may include the teaching of learning, study and test-taking strategies, rein-for cement for content in main-stream classes, reinforcement of organizational skills, classroom accommodations and other basic skill remediation services.

READING RESOURCE SKILLS

5 Credits Full Year

Prerequisite: Recommendation of Special Education Team and parental approval as indicated in the Individual Educational Plan, when a student has shown deficits in decoding, spelling, and/or fluency despite average cognitive ability.

Reading skill improvement is the focus for this resource class, with the consideration of the individual student

LANGUAGE BASIC SKILLS I

5 Credits Full Year

Prerequisite: Recommendation of Special Education Team and parental approval as indicated in the Individual Educational Plan.

Fulfills English requirement and focuses on basic language skills. The student

LANGUAGE BASIC SKILLS II

5 Credits Full Year Prerequisite:

Recommendation of Special Education Child Evaluation Team, completion of Language Basic Skills I, and parental approval as indicated in the Individual Educational Plan.

Fulfills English requirement and continues to focus on basic language skills if the student

LANGUAGE BASIC SKILLS III

5 Credits Full Year

Prerequisite: Recommendation of Special Education Child Evaluation Team, completion of Language Basic Skills I, and parental approval as indicated in the Individual Educational Plan and completion of Language Basic Skills I and II approval of teacher.

Fulfills English requirement and continues to focus on basic language skills if the student

LANGUAGE LIFE SKILLS

5 Credits Full Year

Prerequisite: Recommendation of Special Education Team and parental approval as indicated in the Individual Educational Plan.

Fulfills English requirement and focuses on language skills necessary to function in the world of work, community and family. The student

LIFE SKILLS MATH

5 Credits Full Year

Prerequisite: Recommendation of Special Education Team and parental approval as indicated in the Individual Educational Plan.

This course provides individualized instruction in developing and applying basic math skills for use in practical life and pre-vocational situations.

MATH SKILLS I

5 Credits Full Year Prerequisite: Recommendation of Special Education Team and parental approval as indicated in the Individual Educational Plan.

This course provides instruction and reinforcement of basic skills in whole numbers, fractions, and decimal operations. This course addresses use of percentages, basic geometric formulas, and probability/statistic processes.

MATH SKILLS II

5 Credits Full Year

Prerequisite: Recommendation of Special Education Team and parental approval as indicated in the Individual Educational Plan.

This course provides instruction and reinforcement of basic skills, basic measurement, money handling, and practical application of mathematical problems in daily living. This course introduces Pre-Algebra skills with reinforcement in Geometry, Statistics and Basic Probability.

SOCIAL STUDIES SKILLS

5 Credits Full Year

Prerequisite: Recommendation of Special Education Team and parental approval as indicated in the Individual Educational Plan.

This course is a full year study of social studies, world geography and culture, world history, U.S. history including map reading skills, knowledge of geographical and historical effects on countries, comparative study of various cultures, cause and effect of historical and current events. Yearly emphasis is determined by course rotation on a tri-annual basis.

GOVERNMENT SKILLS

5 Credits Full Year

Prerequisite: Recommendation of Special Education Team and parental approval as indicated in the Individual Educational Plan.

This course is the study of the basic principals of the American political system as reflected in our local, state, and federal government. It provides an overview of current American life and the responsibilities of citizenship.

ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING

5 Credits Full Year

Prerequisite: Recommendation of Special Education Team and parental approval as indicated in the Individual Educational Plan.

Individual instruction is provided to students in basic academic skills, pre-vocational, vocational, leisure and recreational opportunities. Activities will center on students' preparation into the world of work, responsibilities of family life and decision making related to independent living. Self-awareness, achievement, development of values, respect and appreciation of differences among people provide a focus in this course.

PRACTICAL LIFE SKILLS

5 Credits Full Year

Prerequisite: Recommendation of Special Education Team and parental approval as indicated in the Individual Educational Plan.

Individual instruction is provided in basic academic skills, pre-vocational, vocational, leisure and recreational opportunities. Activities will center on students

VOCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT/COMMUNITY SKILLS

Credits - Varied to number of blocks per 10-day cycle.

Prerequisite: Recommendation of Special Education Team and parental approval as indicated in the Individual Educational Plan.

Vocational Development Skills provides student with pre-vocational and vocational training which emphasizes the development of the employment skills needed to prepare for community employment sampling, employment support, and employment.

ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION/PHYSICAL AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

2.50 Credits Semester

Prerequisite: Recommendation of special Education Team and parental approval as indicated in the Individual Educational Plan.

This course includes therapeutic and recreational activities designed to meet specific goals contained in Individual Educational Plans. Activities are developed in cooperation with adaptive physical education teachers, physical therapists, and occupational therapists.

SPEECH, COMMUNICATION, LANGUAGE & HEARING IMPAIRED SERVICES

Full Year - Credit Assigned

Prerequisite: Recommendation of special Education Team and parental approval as indicated in the Individual Educational Plan.

Individual Speech and Language services include individualized educational program for students who have communication impairment. Offerings include the teaching of American Sign Language, speech therapy and basic communication skills.
