This strategy is used to help you build connections (understandings) between material you know and material you don't know. You use a chart to record your information.

STEPS:

First

Brainstorm (think about) what you KNOW (K) about the topic to be read, and record this information. In this case the topic is the "Formation of Islands."

 

Second

Record what you WANT (W) to know about the topic to be read. In this case the topic is the "Formation of Islands."

 

Read the article and . . .

 

Third

List what you have learned (L) after reading or listening to the "Formation of Islands."
