INTERNSHIPS, TEACHING
ASSISTANTSHIPS, INDEPENDENT STUDIES AND SENIOR PROJECTS
INDEPENDENT STUDY
The independent study option is primarily
intended for those students who have demonstrated a high level of
academic capability and who wish to pursue their studies at a depth or
pace not possible in the normal classroom setting. This option may also be
recommended for students whose educational needs, due to physical or
psychological reasons, would be best served in a tutorial program.
Independent study courses are unweighted and are not included in the calcu-
lation of the grade point average or the
class rank. Independent study
is not an option to replace courses required for graduation.
A student desiring to pursue independent
study must first discuss this matter with the teacher whom he/she wishes to
supervise this program. If an arrangement is reached between both parties, an
independent study contract is obtained from his/her counselor. The contract
must then be approved by the counselor, principal, and parent.
FOREIGN STUDY PROGRAM
From time to time, international study
activities are available. In some of these programs a student lives abroad
as a member of a host family. Check with your guidance counselor for the
current availability of such opportunities.
2.5 Credits
Semester Unweighted
Prerequisite:
Permission of the Instructor.
This class is
recommended for all students who are elected to student government or nominate
themselves for student congress. Students will learn leadership skills to apply
to student activities and student governance at MVRHS, but they will also have
an opportunity to make a difference in their school and community.
STUDENT
LIBRARY ASSISTANT
An opportunity for students to learn
skills involved in maintaining a library media collection. Students will
process new materials, shelve books and work with magazines, newspapers and
periodicals, be trained in electronic circulation of materials (CASPR is the
LibraryÕs Automated System). Students will be instructed in the Dewey Decimal
System of Classification. Students will be instructed in the operation of a
variety of media formats such as: TV/VCRÕs, DVD players, slide projectors,
video camcorders, digital cameras, etc. This is a hands-on, practical elective
that will prepare a student to work in a library media environment.
These opportunities exist for students who have a special talent or passion for a subject and wish to work alongside a teacher in running the class. In a biology class, the student may assist in setting up laboratories, working with younger students in the class or providing the teacher with help. In a writing class the T.A. would work closely with the teacher to tutor remedial students or assist a student in catching up on missed work
