ADVANCED
CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS
The
commonwealth Department of Education requires that Career Technical Educational
programs must provide advanced students in grades 10 through 12 with one half
of their school day (2 class periods) in laboratory or shop areas. A student who enters the advanced CTE
program in 10th grade may be granted a waiver from normal graduation
requirements when courses in computers, lifetime fitness, or business are
deemed as priorities for the student.
This choice must be made with the input of the counselor, parents,
instructor and student.
THE
WAIVER PROCESS
The
waiver process for students who are defined above may occur with the agreement
of the principal, guidance counselor, CTE director of vocational education and
special needs director (if a special needs student). Waivers will be granted for required courses previously
taken and failed by the student.
Waivers may be granted from graduation requirements in the following
order:
1) one year of social studies other than
government or history;
2) health and/or PE;
3) a year of science (biology for
ornamental horticulture or food production management and
services or physical science for automotive technology or construction
technology);
4) the second year of mathematics not
including Algebra I;
Some
suggestions for alternatives to the required courses are computer applications
for all CTE students; drafting for automotive technology, building technology
and ornamental horticulture students; and nutrition for food production
management and services.
It
is important to note however, that a student who has been granted waivers as a
CTE student and who does not complete both the 11 and 12 grade CTE programs
will be required to complete any waived graduation requirements.
A
student who enters the advanced CTE program in the 11th grade and
intends to complete both years in a particular CTE area, is responsible for all
graduation requirements and is expected to make use of available class periods
for scheduled courses.

TECH
PREP PROGRAM
The
Martha's Vineyard Regional High School has incorporated a two
plus two program with the community colleges across the state. Tech Prep
is a sequence of study beginning in the junior year of high school
which continues through at least two years of post-secondary occupational
education. This program parallels the college prep course of
study, and presents an alternative to general education
by preparing students for high skill technical occupations.
After completion of the strong academic and technical
programs in high school, tech prep students should be well prepared
to continue their technical education at a two year college
to acquire an associate degree, pursue a baccalaureate degree at
a four year college, or enter full-time employment in their chosen
field.
Tech
Prep offers students a positive learning experience that fosters
personal confidence and self-esteem. Students choose from a list of
specific programs, which allow them to discover and develop
their talents in their career field. Martha's Vineyard Regional
High School is directly affiliated with Cape Cod Community College,
Massachusetts Bay Community College and Baron Institute of Technology. With Tech Prep at any community college
such as Cape Cod Community College a student is ready to enter
the work force well prepared for highly skilled, highly-paid jobs.
Students also have a head start in related degree programs
should they choose to continue their education.
All
Tech Prep courses are activity based with high standards that emphasize applied
academics, critical thinking, and problem solving related to the real
world. A Tech Prep student can earn up to 12 college credits while
still attending high school. These credits cost the student and his or her
family nothing. The current Tech Prep programs offered at Martha's Vineyard
Regional High School are: Computer Information Systems; Carpentry;
Culinary Arts; Management Technology; and Office Technology. See
your guidance counselor for more details.
