The Question: Who were five major British Romantic writers? Select one work from each and explain how it reflects key themes of his or her writing.

THE “A” RANGE ESSAY

• shows an accurate understanding of the question;

• offers insights into the topic that move beyond obvious, surface interpretations;

• includes references to at least five authors and their works;

• uses appropriate supporting details and examples as needed; some lines are quoted from memory;

• is generally free of faulty reasoning;

• exercises reasonable care with spelling, grammar, and punctuation;

• shows clear evidence of reading beyond anything assigned (A+ essay only).

THE “B” RANGE ESSAY

• reflects most of the criteria of the “A” range essay, although some elements might need improvement.

THE “C” RANGE ESSAY

THE “D” RANGE ESSAY

• contains numerous mechanical errors (spelling, grammar, punctuation) and little insight or substantive support.

THE “F” RANGE ESSAY

• reflects little if any understanding of the material; in addition, it contains abundant mechanical errors.
