The Question: Who were five major British Romantic writers? Select one work from each and explain how it reflects key themes of his or her writing.
THE “A” RANGE ESSAY
• shows an accurate understanding of the question;
• offers insights into the topic that move beyond obvious, surface interpretations;
• includes references to at least five authors and their works;
• uses appropriate supporting details and examples as needed; some lines are quoted from memory;
• is generally free of faulty reasoning;
• exercises reasonable care with spelling, grammar, and punctuation;
• shows clear evidence of reading beyond anything assigned (A+ essay only).
THE “B” RANGE ESSAY
• reflects most of the criteria of the “A” range essay, although some elements might need improvement.
THE “C” RANGE ESSAY
• is mechanically sound in the areas of logic, spelling, grammar, and punctuation, but contains few clear references to actual poems, writers, and themes.
THE “D” RANGE ESSAY
• contains numerous mechanical errors (spelling, grammar, punctuation) and little insight or substantive support.
THE “F” RANGE ESSAY
• reflects little if any understanding of the material; in addition, it contains abundant mechanical errors.
